THE IMPORTANCE OF LOVING YOURSELF by PROF. CHIDOZIE UGWOJI

A whole lot of people in the world today believe the idea of self-love is an over hyped and overblown  theory and they tend to forget how important it is. Man aspire to be perfect and this perfection is considered a greater asset or attribute than self-love. When we talk about self-love, it is easy to picture someone reading self improvement books, eating or drinking themselves to stupor or probably hugging a  tree; but self-love is a whole lot  more than that. Experts and researchers have shown that self-love is the key to a mental well being and it keeps depression and anxiety at bay.

Modern society is shaped in such a way that we are sort of bound to constantly compete against each other, or even ourselves. We are always trying to reach our short-term goals and trying to better ourselves to match the expectations set upon us by the society. Many of us are guilty of working long hours and getting less sleep each night.we travel the extra mile and feel content that we have achieved perfectionism. We grind in and out every week; even during the weekend 'relaxing' and 'having a good time' seems like a chore. we end up being too hard on ourselves all too often without even realizing. All of us are more or less stuck up and consumed by our work, social interactions, life goals, weekend plans and so on.

Love is the only thing that keeps us going and makes us less robotic in a world which requires us to work, think and act like we are programmed. Everyone needs love and we spend most of our energy on loving others — be it friends, spouses, children or family.

Self-love is not being selfish; it is just putting yourself first and not being too tough on yourself. So next time you hear that little voice in your head telling you that you are not good enough or that you cannot afford to make mistakes; just ignore it.
When our loved ones make a mistake we often forgive them easily, but when we make a mistake we are often too hard on ourselves.
The first step of self-love is realizing that we are only human and it is okay to make mistakes; it is okay to lose at times; it is expected not to have the best day…week…or month sometimes.

HOW SOCIAL MEDIA SHAPES OUR IDENTITY

Last  year christmas, i had a strange dream. My father and i went to the market in reminiscent of   bus drivers and troublesome conductors, as thousands of   thousands of   people flood the market, we went to the fishmonger to buy native chicken( ‘Okuko’ in igbo language). The fowls crowded, slimy, around our legs, and I knew (in the way that one knows in a dream) that they thought, as they ate from the ground, that they were going to be killed—that they had to experience death before entering adulthood. The next day, I told my father about the dream. He revealed that, when I was three, when we were living in Ajegunle( A neighbourhood located in the heart of lagos ),   he took me to see a truckful of poultry being pumped into an artificial house. I was too young to remember this. But somewhere in my mind the vision of chickens being butchered and spewed into less breathing had lodged itself, resurfacing more than 10 years later. These days, it’s common to...

What Does 'FWM' Mean?

What Does 'FWM' Mean? It's certainly not the most polite acronym to use online or in a text FWM stands for: F*** With Me. Those asterisks can be filled in with the remaining letters required to spell out the F-word. You were warned! The Meaning of FWM You may see FWM used in comments on social media or you may see it in a text message. To make this acronym a little more user-friendly and a lot less vulgar, you can try replacing that F-bomb with the words "talk" or "get." So when someone says FWM, what they really mean is "talk with me" or "get with me." In some cases, FWM can have more of a negative interpretation than a positive or neutral one.
